Barzani reassures Iran: Kurdistan will never be a threat to its neighbors

At the Tehran Dialogue Forum, Nechirvan Barzani reaffirmed that Kurdistan will never pose a threat to Iran, emphasizing historic ties and security cooperation. He expressed support for Turkey’s peaceful approach to the PKK conflict and pledged commitment to regional stability.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Speaking at the 4th Tehran Dialogue Forum, Nechirvan Barzani, President of Iraq's Kurdistan Region, emphasized that the autonomous region will never pose a threat to Iran. He reaffirmed the deep historical ties and cooperation between Kurdistan and Iran, particularly in regional security.

Barzani’s remarks aim to reassure Iran amid ongoing regional instability and concerns over Kurdish militant activity. His message signals the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and proactive diplomacy with Tehran and Baghdad.

The Kurdistan Region has historically been a flashpoint in regional tensions, especially involving Kurdish armed groups like the PKK. As Turkey increases pressure on the group and Iran remains sensitive to cross-border militancy, Barzani is positioning the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) as a cooperative player focused on stability.

Barzani praised Iran for its historical support, particularly during Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks on Halabja in 1988 and the ISIS war in 2015.

“In every difficult moment in our history, Iran has stood by us,” Barzani said.

He further stated, “We will not allow Kurdistan to become a threat to our neighbors, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He emphasized the joint security mechanism between Baghdad and Tehran to ensure border stability.

Barzani also expressed support for Turkey’s new approach to the PKK conflict, advocating for non-military solutions.

“A serious process has started in Turkey. We in the Kurdistan Region support the process,” Barzani stated, arguing that the Kurdish issue cannot be resolved through military means and pledging readiness to help facilitate dialogue.

His remarks reflect broader efforts by the KRG to maintain strategic balance between regional powers, particularly Iran and Turkey, while asserting autonomy in security and diplomacy.

With the PKK issue dissolved in Iraq, and Iran sensitive to instability near its borders, Barzani’s statements could help cool tensions and reinforce Kurdistan’s role as a stabilizer.
